Backwoods Home Magazine is about to become a print magazine again after a one-year hiatus as a digital-only publication. The person who is making this possible is my son, Sam Duffy, who will assume the role of publisher, a job I have had since founding BHM 29 years ago. The magazine’s content will remain unchanged.

Sam is 23, compared to my 74 years, so is more in touch with the new technologies that have so dramatically altered the publishing landscape. He is also about to take a business degree from Oregon State University, and his primary project for the last year has been running his own print magazine, Self-Reliance, and restarting Backwoods Home Magazine as a print publication.

Both Backwoods Home Magazine and Self-Reliance will now be jointly owned by Sam and my daughter, Annie Tuttle, who own the umbrella company, Self-Reliance Publications. Annie is the current managing editor of Self-Reliance, the former managing editor of BHM, and someone who longtime subscribers have seen grow up in the pages of BHM. Like Self-Reliance, BHM will be published four times a year.

I am delighted that my children will carry on my legacy. I will continue writing the “My View” column at the front of the magazine. All of our key writers will remain, from Jackie Clay-Atkinson, John Silveira, and Massad Ayoob to Jeff Yago, Patrice Lewis, and Linda Gabris. Jessie Denning, BHM’s managing editor, will stay at the editorial helm, and I will continue to guide the overall editorial content.

Three cheers for the rebirth of Backwoods Home Magazine as a print magazine! May it enjoy another 29 years. I hope you will subscribe. – Dave Duffy

  1. Just saw this news online. That’s terrific. It’s been sad to see so many great magazines end their print runs. I used to subscribe to BWH and did so for many years. Glad the next generation is continuing these magazines. Now I just need to decide if I want one or both!

  2. If BHM comes back to print I will subscribe to it again. I miss my mags. I was a customer for well over 20 years.

  3. Cannot wait for the return of the paper BHM !!! have subscribed forever in paper, but as a NOOK user, I did not get the Kindle.I have enjoyed getting to know the Self Reliance magazine, and will likely continue it too….but am thrilled to have my old faithful companion BHM back in print. Thank you so for bringing it back….I Can’t wait for the Ask Jackie column…

  4. Hi Sandra,

We are planning on having BHM back on some newsstands but that probably wont happen for a couple of issues. Sorry for this inconvenience!

  5. Will the print issues Backwoods Home Magazine be available at Barnes and Noble, or just through subscription?

  6. I’m so glad you’re exited! We’re exited to be publishing BHM again as well! Please call us at 541-929-7106 and we’ll have everything taken care of.

  7. I HAVE NEVER HAD THE PAPER WORKS OF YOUR MAGAZINE, HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE KINDLE, AND FELT REALLY BAD, WHEN YOU, STOPPED THE PAPER, AS I FELT LIKE I HAD, LOST MY CHANCE, THIS WEEKEND I WENT TO A GARAGE SALE THAT I HAVE ATTENDED FOR ABOUT THIRTY YEARS, BEFORE WITH MY MAMA AND SISTER AND NOW MY SISTER AND I, I COULDNT STAY FOR THE BAG SALE AS MY SISTER AND I WERE TOO TIRED, I AM 72 AND SHE 83, SO JUST AS WE WERE GIVING IT UP I FOUND A STACK OF YOUR MAGAZINES FOR THREE FOR TWENTY FIVE CENTS, IMAGINE HOW HAPPY I WAS, AND HERE THREE DAYS LATER I AM HEARING YOU ARE GOING TO PAPER AGAIN, I AM REALLY EXCITED, I JUST HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET TO PAPER INSTEAD OF KINDLE. DO YOU HAVE PHONE NUMBER, I KNOW HOW TO TO DO THAT.

  8. SWEET!!!!! I have missed your paper version. I can’t wait to sit by the fire, hot drink in my hand and a “Great book” to read. THANK YOU!!

  9. Yay! This lifer never really caught on to the digital version & had to print out his digital version each month so he could ‘hold it in his hands’ and read… but I’d gladly do that before doing without BHM! Glad to see it back in print.

  10. Hi Susan,

The two magazines will cover many of the same topics on homesteading and rural living. The main difference between the two magazines will be the politics and gun articles BHM covers.

    Thank you!

  11. Congratulations! What a blessing!!! I’ve sure missed your magazine and the greatest encouragement found in your group to live this backwoods life joyfully!!
